When families lose their homes, children often lose their schools and access to services, which can negatively affect their academic development. In fact, children who experience excessive mobility are only half as likely to be proficient in reading as their peers. Moreover, they are much more likely to be held back and eventually drop out of school. Such changes not only impact their education but their physical and mental health as well. First Focus works with housing, education, and child welfare advocates to reduce homelessness and student mobility in an effort to increase academic achievement.
