The economic downturn has put millions of children at risk of experiencing the pains of poverty. First Focus estimates that the current recession is having disastrous effects on our nation’s young people, with one in seven American children living with an unemployed parent, over 2 million kids left homeless, and millions more living in poverty and relying on programs such as food stamps. These young people have a greater chance of experiencing behavioral problems, facing issues related to their physical and mental health, suffering from child abuse, and failing to complete high school or college. Since the onset of the recession, First Focus has been conducting research to better understand how the recession is impacting children and families.
