Several provisions within the federal tax code help address the economic needs of America’s families with children. These important provisions are the standard personal exemption, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit; and the most recently created Making Work Pay Credit. These credits, many of which enjoy broad, bipartisan support, combat poverty by offsetting the costs of raising children and providing proven work incentives. And although they can make a dramatic difference in a low-income family’s budget, they often go unclaimed, largely due to unnecessarily complicated eligibility requirements. First Focus is working to expand, improve, and simplify these credits, to ensure more American families are eligible for and benefit from them.
