First Focus Moderates Child Support Briefing

On Friday, July 13, Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and John Cornyn (R-TX), joined First Focus and 11 other organizations in hosting a briefing on the vital role that child support plays in the lives of low-income children.  Discussed was how improvements in child support collections are now threatened by cuts to the federal child support enforcement funding, scheduled to take effect on October 1.  Senators Rockefeller and Cornyn are sponsors of the Child Support Protection Act (S.803) to prevent these cuts.

Speakers included:

• Ahaviah Glaser, Vice President of Family Economics and Senior Council, First Focus, a bipartisan advocacy organization committed to making children and their families a priority in federal policy and budget decisions.

• Vicki Turetsky, Director, Family Policy, Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) and renowned child support expert

• Alicia Key, Deputy Attorney General for Child Support, Office of the Texas Attorney General.  Ms. Key administers the IV-D child support enforcement for the State of Texas and has worked in the child support program since 1992

• Lisa Marks, Director of the Milwaukee County Child Support Enforcement Agency.  Ms. Marks is responsible for implementing innovative initiatives for low-income mothers and fathers, whose agency may now face layoffs

• Joe Jones, President and CEO for the Center for Fathers, Families workforce development, responsible fatherhood and family services (e.g., healthy marriage) to low income parents and formerly incarcerated parents in Baltimore City
