Research Assistant

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
First Focus is looking for energetic individuals interested in pursuing a career in child advocacy and policy research to join its team. Research assistants will assist policy staff with a diverse array of activities, including the following: attending coalition meetings, congressional briefings and hearings; tracking and analyzing federal legislation; assisting policy team in drafting testimony, policy briefs and materials; organizing project materials, information and resources; reviewing and summarizing published literature and other written materials; following news stories of relevance to our policy work and keeping policy team abreast of current events; performing data entry and management tasks; and providing general support to the policy team.

Responsibilities:

  • Researches and analyzes a variety of policy issues regarding children and families (e.g. health, education, and federal budgetary issues).
  • Advocates First Focus’ positions in meetings with key Congressional staff and leadership.
  • Responds to phone and e-mail inquiries about the policy work of the organization.
  • Interacts with the staff of First Focus, community leaders, elected officials (and members of their staff) in person, by telephone or through correspondence.
  • Prepares briefing materials, fact sheets, reports and other documents.
  • Attends and report to leadership team on congressional hearings, briefings, meetings, and other events related to the work of the organization.
  • Provides assistance to the policy staff in all areas.

Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, Public Administration or related field. 1-3 years experience in a policy and/or research role; years of experience may be offset with specific knowledge and work history in children and family public policy issues, fundraising and political experience. Capitol Hill experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal policy-making process and political landscape.
  • Knowledge of issues facing children and families in health care and education preferred.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a wide range of external contacts.
  • Strong capabilities in analysis and research.
  • Must be a team player, self-starter, and flexible.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and projects is required.
